Restorative Burns Scheduled for Two Owatonna Parks
The Owatonna Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department and the Fire Department are collaborating to conduct controlled burns at two City parks.
Residents in the burn areas may wish to close their windows during the burns.
The north shoreline area of Lake Kohlmier is scheduled for a burn Monday, September 25. If inclement weather occurs, a backup date of Monday, October 9 is scheduled.
The north half of Leo Rudolph Nature Reserve is scheduled for a burn Monday, October 9. If inclement weather occurs, a backup date of Monday, October 23 is scheduled. A burn in this park is done annually, alternating between the north and south sections.
The Owatonna Fire Department will conduct these controlled burns, and will leverage this opportunity to perform a training exercise.
Such burning benefits prairie areas by stimulating grasses and wildflower growth which improves habitats in nesting areas for pheasants and nongame birds. It removes old vegetation to make room for new growth.
