Ten-digit dialing starts Tuesday across southern Minnesota, but why -- and what does that mean?

Regulators say they are running out of numbers in the 507 area code, so the addition of a second area code becomes a reality for southern Minnesota on Tuesday, July 30th.

612 and 218 were Minnesota's first area codes, with 507 being added in 1954. Since then we've added 320, 651, 952, and 763.

If you have a 507 area code you will keep it. New southern Minnesota will be issued with a 924 area code.

So starting on Tuesday, you will have to dial a 507 or 924 to call your neighbor, order a pizza, or call this radio station.
