A website devoted to providing "Christmas tips, tricks, and traditions" recently surveyed Americans about their tastes when it came to "iconic Christmas meals, dishes, and desserts".  The data compiled turned up all sorts of familiar favorites - from pumpkin pie to goose, potato pancakes, Spritz cookies, lefse, even fruitcake!

After getting the initial results, the company then had participants rank their favorites - from one to fifty - re-ranking each state on the map to determine the 'most" iconic Christmas food and the "least favorite" along the way.

In first place is pumpkin pie - the entrant from New Hampshire.  I think it's safe to say that pumpkin pie is an often seen dessert at many a holiday meal and celebration - especially this time of year.

In last place - was Minnesota, with lutefisk.  Apparently the lye-soaked ethnic delicacy is too much to handle for many people.

Here we go - time to churn up the longstanding argument over lutefisk:  Those who love it - love it and those who hate it - hate it, and there's no in between.  And apparently that love-hate relationship has spilled over into the national conscience.

For a number of reasons, lutefisk is associated with the Christmas holiday season.  So it's only fitting that when a poll was taken of 'America's Favorite Iconic Christmas Foods', that's the delicacy that ended up representing Minnesota. That's also why Minnesota - and lutefisk - comes in dead last.

The complete list available to see on the companies website; there's even an interactive map available that lets you click around and explore.

So if Minnesota came in 50th place with lutefisk, how did our neighboring states fare?  Wisconsin ranked in 29th place with 'marinated venison'.  North Dakota ranked in 43rd place with lefse.  South Dakota's Spritz cookies came in 24th place (24th -  I mean, who doesn't like Spritz cookies??). Iowa took 41st place with pickle wraps.  Michigan had a high ranking - 6th place - with sugar cookies.  And Illinois and it's potato pancakes came in 30th.
