Big Southeast Football: Owatonna Rolls, Rochester Teams Struggle

The Big Southeast football season began with six blowouts, but the biggest news is the tragedy out of Austin, where a 14-year-old player passed away Saturday from complications from cardiac arrest according to the Austin Daily Herald. Chris Fischer collapsed August 22 during a football practice and was airlifted to St. Mary's in Rochester.

On the field, the six games between Big Southeast District teams ended with an average 35-point margin of victory, led by Owatonna's 61-0 domination over Faribault. The Huskies led 54-0 at halftime.

Austin jumped out to a quick lead over Rochester Mayo with a defensive score and a blocked punt for a touchdown. The Herald reports the Packers recovered an onside kick and scored again for a 20-0 lead. Austin won the game 41-20.

Northfield used a balanced attack to pull away from Mankato East 31-14. The Northfield News indicates the Raiders had 211 rushing yards and 206 passing yards.

Winona forced a fumble on the first play from scrimmage according to the Winona Daily News and scored on the next play en route to a 50-14 dismantling of Rochester John Marshall. Winona returns numerous players that were part of a Prep Bowl runner-up finish last year.

Mankato West blanked Rochester Century 28-0. Owatonna coach Jeff Williams said that game was close most of the way on Saturday's KRFO high school coaches show. New Prague rocked Red Wing 56-8.

Week two match-ups include Rochester Mayo at Owatonna, Austin at Red Wing, Northfield at Rochester JM, New Prague at Century and Mankato West versus East.
