Fire Destroys Home in Steele County

On Sunday morning, a fire destroyed a trailer home located off Highway 45. The entire north side of the home was engulfed when firefighters arrived just after 1 in the morning. Owatonna fire fighters, along with assistance from the Medford Fire Department, already on scene, worked to contain the fire.

Unfortunately, the home is a total loss:

 flames were wind-driven which made almost impossible to enter the home and control the damage spreading  from the inside.

There was one person in the home who was alerted to something wrong by his dog. He got out safely, the dog perished in the fire. The resident was transported by Mayo One for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although it is believed that the source was a portable heater.
