“Minnesota’s Premier Nudist Club” Is Located About An Hour North Of Faribault
With the weather beginning to warm up, and the potential for temps in the 80s next week in Southern Minnesota, some summer businesses are getting ready to open up for the season. One business that is warm-weather dependent is one of the Nation's oldest naturalist clubs and the oldest in Minnesota. The Oakwood Club, "Minnesota's Premier Nudist Club", is also getting ready to open up for the year.
According to the club's website, "The Oakwood Club, located a short drive north of St. Paul, Minnesota, is celebrating its 80th year! Established in 1942 as the Gopher State Sun Club, Oakwood is one of the oldest landed nudist clubs in America. Jim Cossins, one of the founders of the American Sunbathing Association, the forerunner of the American Association of Nude Recreation (AANR), was one of the original founders of the Oakwood Club and its first president. What started as a group of five like-minded families who gathered on an island in the Mississippi River southeast of St. Paul to socialize and soak up the sun has grown into 150+ members!"
Believe it or not, the club, originally known as the Gopher State Sun Club opened up on Grey Cloud Island, between Saint Paul and Hastings in 1942. From there the club moved to Circle Pines, and then in the 60s finally landed in their present-day home near Stacy.
The club allows visitors and is open year-round, but a majority of the club's visitors happen in the busier months, generally when water is on, April 15 - October 15.
