Mankato West tied for second place in the Big Nine Conference last year. They looked pretty strong against Owatonna Thursday night, sweeping the Huskies 25-9, 25-15, 25-19. Owatonna stayed close in the early stages of the first and third set, but the Scarlets went on a big run each time to get control of the match.

Senior Emily Bergeman led the West attack with about 13 kills. Mattea Burmeister reached ten kills. For the Huskies Kaitlyn Madole and Jenna Gleason each had about six kills. Owatonna plays at the Marshall Tournament Friday and Saturday. They host defending conference champ Northfield Tuesday, September 10.

In other OHS sports Thursday, the girls tennis team beat John Marshall 6-1 to improve to 6-1 in the conference. Girls soccer lost 2-1 to Rochester Century. The Panthers grabbed a quick 1-0 lead at the Lincoln Soccer Complex. Asia Buryska had the Huskies' lone goal. OHS plays at Eagan Saturday at 1 pm.

Owatonna boys soccer tied Century in Rochester 2-2. The Huskies play at Hastings Saturday at 1 pm. OHS girls swimming topped Albert Lea 94-82. First place finishes included Anna Youngquist (100 butterfly), Ellie Youngquist (500 free), Cheryl Smith (100 back stroke), and Logan Norrid (100 breast stroke).

Area volleyball results Thursday include Medford with a 3-0 sweep over United South Central, Triton downed Goodhue 3-1, Hayfield swept NRHEG 3-0 and Bethlehem Academy beat Blooming Prairie 3-1. In Big Nine play, Mayo swept Red Wing 3-0, Faribault outlasted John Marshall 3-2, and Century beat Albert Lea 3-0. Top-rated Kenyon-Wanamingo beat Pine Island 3-0.

The Triton/Kenyon-Wanamingo/Hayfield boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 game to Tri-City United Thursday in Dodge Center.
