Schultz Soars to the Top of Owatonna’s All-Time Scoring List
Owatonna High School senior Sydney Schultz needed just three points to eclipse Sarah Draayer. Those points came quickly and the game was stopped momentarily to recognize the record. Schultz spent the rest of the night adding to it, ending with 35 in the Huskies' 61-49 win over Rochester Mayo.
Schultz told KRFO radio after the game that it's fun to score the points, but that she couldn't do what she has done without the help and support of her teammates and fans. Coach Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa said Schultz works hard during the season and in the off-season. Hugstad-Vaa says it's impressive Schultz has been a starter since her freshman year.
Rochester Mayo, who graduated heavily off last winter's Big Nine Conference co-championship team, hung close with Owatonna even after falling behind 29-17 late in the first half. OHS led 35-28 at the half. Mayo rallied to within four points early in the second half. OHS pushed the lead back to nine right afterward and kept the Spartans at arms' length the rest of the way.
Jenna Zeman scored seven points for Owatonna. Ahnna Stelter added six. Hannah Gebur grabbed at least seven rebounds in the second half, alone. Mayo was led by Nancy Soro's 13 points. Claudia Bell scored 11 and Jenifer Giefer had 10.
Owatonna (7-4, 6-1 Big Nine) hosts Rochester Century Saturday night at 7:30PM.
