The National Weather Service says that there's a risk of severe weather across portions of southern Minnesota this afternoon, with damaging winds being the main threat.

Heavy rain, large hail, and tornadoes will also be possible across the area.

The greatest risk of severe weather will be in the most southeastern part of the state including Rochester, western portions of Wisconsin including La Crosse and Eau Claire. A lesser risk of severe weather extends into south central Minnesota including Owatonna, Faribault, Mankato, Albert Lea, Austin, Northfield, and the Twin Cities metro area.

Much colder air will move into the region on Thursday night. Wind chills will range from 5 to 15 above late Thursday night and Friday morning.

According to the national Weather Service, fast-moving thunderstorms are expected to move across the area Thursday, mainly during the afternoon. A few of these storms could become severe with damaging winds and isolated tornadoes the main threats. Now is the time to plan where you will seek shelter if storms approach your location. In addition to the severe threat, winds will gust into the 30 to 45 mph range.

Behind the cold front, we'll finally get a taste of late-fall and winter-like temperatures. with highs Friday through at least Wednesday not making it our of the 20s -- and we can expect low temps in the teens.

The National Weather Service says we can expect below normal temps through the end of November.
