Road construction season is upon us. One project in Owatonna will feature the removal of a traffic light at Main Street and Lincoln Avenue. The intersection will become a four-way stop, and in fact, was switched to an all-way red-flashing signal in December. The traffic signal will reportedly be removed at some point in April.

In a news release from the Steele County Highway Department, the county and "they City of Owatonna recently completed a signal justification report for this intersection that concluded the intersection does not have the vehicle and pedestrian traffic volume requirements needed to justify a signal."

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE, ZIPPER MERGE OR ROUNDABOUTS?

As the road construction season revs up, you will get the chance to practice the zipper merge. The Minnesota Department of Transportation states, "When most drivers see the first "lane closed ahead" sing in a work zone, they slow too quickly and more to the lane that will continue through the construction area. This driving behavior can lead to unexpected and dangerous lane switching, serious crashes and road rage."

Work is yet to begin on a new roundabout in Owatonna at the site of the new high school. The Owatonna City Council recently approved a traffic circle for 18th Street SE and CSAH 48, or Bixby Road. The roundabout won't actually be constructed until 2022. The new high school opens in the fall of 2023.
